Owen Stephens on his retirement as organist at Christ Church

To Rev. David Curry and all Parishioners of Christ Church:

I wish to extend my thanks to the Christ Church Family for the wonderful retirement reception held for me last Sunday. Your words of thanks and lovely gifts mean a great deal to me. Throughout my twenty-five years as Organist I have always felt the same warmth, appreciation and goodwill which was expressed both in person and on the card. I offer a special thank you for all who contributed to the food and other efforts that made the Reception such a success. I regret that I was not able to speak to everyone but I certainly appreciated the attendance of all.

I must add here a couple “extra special thank yous” – one to members of the Choir – your faithfulness and assistance with the music for the Services has always been appreciated, even though I have not told you often enough; and a very, very special one to Fr. David Curry – words cannot express – your assistance with the music, your wonderful discussions, your knowledge, your help in difficult situations, your friendship etc, etc. etc. – it has been an inspiration!!! (Even if you did turn on the alarm and leave me in the Church a couple times – after all – no one is perfect, although some people come close!)

It has become evident that physical conditions that I have developed in recent years have contributed greatly to the need to retire at this time. I know that I am going to regret it frequently and I very much appreciate the privilege you have given me of continuing to come in and play the Organ. It means so much to be able to do this – thank you.

May God bless you all, individually and collectively, and may His Love continue to inspire the work of Christ Church.

Very Sincerely,

Owen Stephens

Advent/Christmas Service of Lessons and Carols 2019

On Sunday, December 8th, 2019, at 4:00pm the annual Advent/Christmas Services of Nine Lessons and Carols with King’s-Edgehill School (Grades 7-11) will be held at Christ Church. A pageant of Word and Song, the service is an integral feature of our intellectual and spiritual communities such as the School and the Parish. Members of the Parish and those of the wider community are invited and encouraged to attend.

There is something quite powerful and significant in the parade of readings and songs. It is not a show or a performance but a participatory event that challenges students and faculty, friends and family, priest and people to sit and listen, to stand and sing and to do all that together. It is one of the counter-cultural aspects of the School and the Parish.

It was just over one hundred years ago that this service was first inaugurated in December 1918 following the overwhelming and devastating ravages of the First World War. The service speaks of peace and hope in the face of the horrors of war and the evils of our humanity. It awakens us to the real dignity of our humanity as the counter to our deadly destructiveness. It is found in paying attention to the pageant of God’s Word coming as light into the darkness of the world and into the darkness of our hearts.

I encourage you to come and see, to sing and listen.

Fr. David Curry

Capella Regalis Christmas Concert

Christ Church is very pleased to announce that Capella Regalis Men & Boys Choir will perform a Christmas concert on Friday, December 21st, at 7pm. Tickets cost $10 and may be purchased at the door or in advance at Windsor Home Hardware.

Capella Regalis Christmas Concert

Capella Regalis Men and Boys Choir, directed by Nick Halley, celebrates its third annual To Bethlehem With Kings concert with three Christmas performances, in Windsor, Lunenburg, and Halifax.  A traditional and heart-warming evening of beautiful carols for Christmas, ancient and modern, performed by a choir of 12 boys (ages 7-14) and 12 men.  The concert will also include hymns for audience participation, Paul Halley playing pipe organ, and the Maritime Brass Quintet joining the ensemble for the final, Halifax performance.

Capella Regalis Men and Boys Choir was founded in Halifax by Director Nick Halley in 2010 and is modeled on the great Anglican tradition of men and boys church choirs.  While Canada was once rich with such choirs, Capella Regalis is one of only a handful of men and boys choirs in Canada today.  It aims to help rejuvenate the tradition in Canada.  The choir sings Choral Evensong every Tuesday of the academic term at 5:00 p.m. in the University of King’s College Chapel, 6350 Coburg Road, Halifax.  The choir also performs concerts around Nova Scotia throughout its September – June season.  Please visit www.capellaregalis.com for more information.
