Dr Edith Humphrey to speak at Acadia University

Dr Edith HumphreyRenowned New Testament scholar and theologian Dr Edith M. Humphrey will be the featured speaker for the 2010 Hayward Lectures at Acadia University. She will deliver a series of three public lectures on “What You Have Received: What the Bible Really Says About Tradition”. The lecture schedule is as follows:

All lectures will take place at 7:30pm in the K.C. Irving Auditorium, Acadia University, Wolfville.

Dr Humphrey is William F. Orr Professor of New Testament at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Before coming to Pittsburgh, she served as Professor of Scripture and Dean at Augustine College, Ottawa. She previously taught at many universities and colleges, including Regent College, Vancouver.

As a member of the Anglican Church of Canada for almost 25 years, Dr Humphrey spoke persuasively in support of traditional Anglican beliefs in such current controversial issues as worship and human sexuality. She served on the Primate’s Theological Commission from 1996 to 2004.

In June 2009, after 13 years of study and discernment, Dr Humphrey was chrismated and received into the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Events

Christ Church Book Club and Cinema Paradiso

Christ Church Book Club will resume in September and Cinema Paradiso in October. All are welcome to attend and join in the discussions.

Christ Church Book Club will meet at 7:30 pm on the first Tuesday of the month from September through May (except January.) The first book is Vermeer’s Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World by Timothy Brook. For more information on this and the other books to be discussed, click here.

Christ Church Cinema Paradiso will meet to view and discuss a film at 6:30 pm on the third Thursday of each month from October through May (except December and April). The first film will be The Merchant of Venice on 21 October. The complete schedule is posted here.

Both groups will meet in the Parish Hall.

General Synod has upheld its commitment to the Anglican Communion by way of a resolution that calls for the reception, study and adoption of the Anglican Communion Covenant at the 2013 Synod. For this, such as it is, we should give praise.

The General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada meets this week in Halifax. It is also the 300th Anniversary of the first Anglican Service in North America – at Fort Anne in 1710. Please pray for the General Synod and especially for the unity of the Anglican Communion. As a Parish we have endorsed the Anglican Communion Covenant, promoted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, as a mechanism for achieving the unity of the Communion. May it not be rejected. – Fr. Curry
